Great start. I like the shading on the face which shows all the contours and character. Can't wait to see the finished version.

Thanks, Fran, for answering my question. You put a lot of personality into the art, and it shows. Wonderful.

Imogen, you asked and I think it is what happens to me and my own reaction to the person as I have to concentrate on a face. I recall, not only the features but the bits of expression that made the person I am drawing important to me. I am not particularly good at an exact likeness as my hands have not overcome the difficulties presented by forming a smooth line in this medium but find as I use the blender it gets better. Thank you all for comments. Fran (I do use the photos but do not scan or copy them)

Fran, do you mean that the person changes under such close scrutiny? I often wondered how portrait artists felt about their subjects, as they have to study them for a time. I suppose it's no different to studying a still life scene, I think it results in more knowledge about whatever it is. Fascinating.

I am finding that in attempting to draw the folk I have met, or old friends that the concentration required enables one to see beyond one's own concept to the person behind the features--or the memory. It is difficult to find the right brush for each portrait so I have decided to concentrate on one until I really know what to choose and how to use the blender in distributing color and form. Fran

He has an interesting face. Is he a real life someone or a figment of your imagination? Whatever the answer, I'd say you are doing good.
